This past summer during a development wide yard sale, I picked up some trays for mere pennies. They were plain and solid colored, so I decided to try fancying one of them up with scrapbook paper and mod podge. I was so excited with the result!

Here is what I started with, a red square tray, a little pad of scrap book paper and of course, mod podge.

I cut strips of paper for the sides, and coated them on both sides for the corners, so the paper was really malleable to get a smooth edge.
Then I covered the bottom with mostly whole 4×6 pages, and used mod podge over the top. I got carried away with the brush and had to patch a couple of little spots.
This is what it looked like after it dried.
Then I spray painted it with a clear glaze.
This is it, all accessorized; a pretty spot to set my jewelry or glasses, and it cost just pennies!
This is only the second time I have ever used mod podge, and I am really having fun with it. It kind of makes me feel like a kid again, with glue all over my fingers.

  9. Great idea! Thanks for the lesson. I’m definitely going to be looking out for trays. I bought a pretty vintage tray that was perfect as is and I have it hanging by binder clips and use it as a magnet board, but I could use more and this is perfect idea to transform some of those ugly ones I’ve seen.
    Merry Christmas!
