Accessorizing the Master Bedroom

In the last year we have painted our master bedroom a color that I just absolutely love!

We first picked out a color at the store, bought 2 gallons of it, brought it home, started painting, and I hated it. It looked like a flesh or makeup color–not attractive. I decided I would rather eat the cost of the paint instead of living with a color that I hated. We then discovered that the store would let you buy  small 7.5 oz trial sizes. Yahoo! We bought 3 different colors, and finally found this gold color that is just what I wanted.
I have  so learned that a color can look drastically different in your home with it’s unique lighting, than what it did at the store.  A bamboo color I had picked for our living room ended up looking like a fluorescent  green, and so our living room with very high ceilings had to have three additional coats of paint to cover it up. I have learned my lesson!
Anyway, now the room is painted, and decluttered.

Remember this!? Yikes! Anyway, that’s history, and I am ready to put the finishing touches on the room.

My windows have been bare, and I really didn’t want long curtains that collect dust and have to be vacuumed frequently since I have asthma.  However, the windows  needed some color and to look more “finished,” and so I settled on colorful valences.

My lamps were kind of  “blah” so I thought I would try and give them a facelift.

I tried ribbon, flowers and fabric, but they looked like a bad arts and crafts project. So I switched them out with some lamps from another room, which I’ll show you in a minute.

I needed something to hang on the empty wall above the bed. So I pulled this wreath out of storage and added some warmer color flowers and a ribbon to tie together the colors in the room. You’ll see it in my after photos.

This clock which I thought worked well with the colors and decor in the room was a mere $6.00 at a discount store.

I bought some pillows at Target to complement and unite the color theme in the room. I am not a fan of 15 pillows on the bed that have to be removed at night; I’m just too practical for that. For me though, a couple of pillows are just perfect.

Ok, here are my after shots:

The curtains make it so warm and cozy looking, and no one who knows me will be surprised  that they are plaid, because I love plaid and stripes!

These lamps look sooooo much better than the plain ones with cream shades, and the wreath adds so much cheerful color.
I love how it looks now, so warm and colorful and inviting. I am now sold on the fact that accessorizing is a must to add those finishing touches to a room that make it really inviting.

  1. The paint color complements the color of the bed covering and pillows so beautifully! Great choices. I really like your blog – it is realistic (rather than showing practically impossible projects, etc) and the photos are lovely!

  2. How beautiful! Yellow is especially hard to get right, it seems. I’m glad you found the perfect shade for your room!

  3. Looks great Margo! I love the new valences and accessories. I must admit though that that “flesh” colored paint looks great in my basement!! 🙂 Hehehehe!

  5. I love the colors you chose. Our master bedroom is similar with furniture and that pretty burgundy. Instead of gold, tho, we have a mushroom taupe wall and touches of green. i know those aren’t ‘popular” with decorators now, but you have to go with what you love! Good job on yours – it looks relaxing and tasteful!

  6. How fun! Looks like you really put a lot of work into! So glad you found a color you love! Stopping by from Hope Studios link up!

  8. I love the colors you used. I have those same tones in my master – only the walls are white. I’ve been thinking about painting them – well, asking hubby to paint, that is. You have inspired me. Hubby thanks you. hehehe

  9. It looks fabulous! Of course I may be a little partial since that is the same color as my master. It is so warm and just makes me happy. Hopefully you agree.

  10. Awesome job, and is one of the pillows made from a valance? If not, it looks like it matches perfectly. I have very similar if not the same valances in our office. Love the colors, looks so warm and inviting. Now if only I could get my dressers to be as clear as yours. Thanks for sharing.

  11. That is almost exactly the color of our master bedroom, except we went truly bold and painted a darker, very warm accent wall. I have had a love/hate relationship with out wall color since the day we painted it, but it’s slowly starting to grow on me. I think the key is accessorizing with minimal color everywhere else so that too many things don’t jump out at you all at once. But I appreciated seeing your post and the things you’ve done with a very similar color.

  12. WOW! That is beautiful! I love it. We used all Behr paint in our house when we painted a few years ago and we loved it. I bought many different samples to try from them. 3 different samples of yellow to be exact but I never found one that I LOVED. Yours is beautiful though. I really need to declutter and tidy up my bedroom.

  13. I am loving these beautiful colours in your gorgeous room. This post is so inspirational. I would love it if you would share this today at our WIW linky party. I hope you can join us!
