Organizing my Closet

My family has had a fair amount of company this summer, and when the kids give up their rooms for guests, I often stash their clothes in my closet so they won’t disturb our guests. Needless to say my closet had gotten into quite a mess. I can’t blame it all on that, but that’s my story, and I am sticking to it!

Our master closet is a walk through to the master bath, and my husband has one side, and yep, this is my side before I tackled it. In the process of emptying the closet and talking with my hubby, we decided to switch sides so he could have the built in shelves, and I could have a double hanging rod. (I couldn’t have a double rod on my side because we needed to move the top shelf higher which would have blocked attic access.)

So, we switched sides, and here is what I started with. As I was going through my things to put back in the closet, I asked the “hard” questions. “Is it ugly? Is it comfortable? Have I worn it in the last say, 3 years? Does my hubby hate it? etc…”

I ended up with two garbage bags full of clothes for donation. (Maybe someone else won’t think they’re ugly!)

Then I put most of my summer clothes in an under the bed storage container since the days are cooling off here some. This left me with a lot less to put back in my closet. Yes!

I had ordered a double hanging rod and a decorative zip up bin from The Container Store, and so I put these to good use.

I filled the bin with my purses and bags, and

recovered a lamp shade to add some decoration and extra light to the closet.

Here are my after photos! The shoe bag on the back of the door keeps the shoes off the floor which I really like, because it gives the closet a less cluttered look. The little chest of drawers holds undergarments.

I think it looks even better in real life than it does in the pictures.

  1. Great job on the closet! I really need to do mine. It’s a mess. Thanks for visiting my blog, btw. That scheduling post I linked up was an old schedule. I still have the same philosophy. But it’s been over a year since I’ve dragged myself to the Y at 5:30am. My baby is 8 months old now. I probably could do it. I probably should do it…

  2. wow! wish i was as organized! i would love for you to link up this or any other amazing project you have over at my creativity party going on right now!

    thanks so much for sharing!

  3. I really love the clear shoe organizer on the door! For my sewing room, I can really see some good applications there. Where did you find it?

  4. Very nice!

One trick I learned from my mom is to hang clothes by color. All of my reds are together, blues together, etc. It makes it so much easier to find exactly what I want. My husband used to tease me about my rainbow looking clothes until he realized how quickly I could find the exact item I wanted. Now both of us have rainbow racks! Try this with your slacks, too.

  5. I am planning to clean and organize my/our closet and some of your suggestions will be very useful. Several years ago, we did a double hanging rod for Mr.Z. and now I want one for my side. Like how you hung your scarves.
    Really neat looking
