Family Room Organization

It can be a challenge to get family rooms and playrooms organized.

Our living room is our family room, and most of the time our playroom too, since my kids don’t like going downstairs to the basement without my husband or I, and they seem to prefer dragging their toys out to the living room instead of playing in their bedrooms.

The living room coffee table is still their favorite place to bring their toys and play.

See what I mean?

So I use whatever furniture I can that has some closed storage to try and help reduce some of the inevitable visual clutter.

I had my husband make an extra shelf in this yard sale piece to contain our dvds.

The movies can be easily put away and are out of site when we want them to be.

Baskets are great for tucking things in and yet look nice in a room. We used to use these for home-school items, but now they contain magazines and library books.

We always have a big basket of coloring books and lots of crayons in the living room.

I love my little chest that hides paperwork, computer paper and envelopes.

This decorative desk hides hanging file folders, webkinz passwords, art supplies…

These bins contain office supplies, camera accessories, school papers and cd’s. My “picture” boxes hold various things like crayons and 3D glasses (for our movies)…

Even with all my attempts at corralling things, our living room usually looks pretty lived in, and you know what, that’s ok. I want to treasure my time with my kids, and not fuss at them all the time to pick up their toys. There must be a good balance somewhere, and I hope to find it some time before they’re grown!

  1. Awesome! I have to admit in our livingroom we got a coffee table to put games underneath. I’ve loved it so that when we picked out furniture for the family room my must was a coffee table with shelf underneath. :0)

  5. Thank you very much for your blog! I started reading it yesterday and you inspired me to start organizing my drawers. I cleaned up my medicine cabinet and surprisingly everything fit into one shoe box, leaving me with space for other things. I finally cleaned out one of my kitchen drawers. And can’t wait to do more 🙂 I will be getting one of those shoe organizers to store little things. Thank you for all your great ideas! We have a very small house with almost no storage/closet space, so I am really happy to find out how others organize their spaces.
