My precious little girl turned 10 this week, and she has an affection for butterflies.

Almost every Spring or Summer we purchase a butterfly kit, and have grown butterflies from larvae.
They first mail you the kit with a coupon to send in for the larvae.  The weather has to be good for them to mail them.
It’s been a wonderful addition to our homeschooling curriculum.

It turned out that it wasn’t hard at all!

Here is how I made it: start with an 8 or 9 inch round cake.

Cut in half.

Cut pieces as shown, and then turn them out into a butterfly shape.

To make it easier to frost, Betty Crocker recommended freezing it for a little while first, to prevent so many crumbs.

I used some frosting gel, colored sugar, licorice and jelly beans.

I outlined some designs and filled them in with colored sugar and jelly beans.

There are lots of different and pretty ways you could decorate the wings, but I opted for simple.

My sweet angel loved her cake, and I was thrilled to make it for her!

  2. I found this through the Teach Me Tuesdays, and I thought it was SO adorable! I love the simplicity of it. My little girl is 3, and I can see her loving this, so I think I’ll stash the idea away for her next birthday 🙂

  3. How sweet and just the right things for a little girl’s 10th Birthday! Heck, I’d take it and I’m nearly old enough to be a G-ma!

Thanks for sharing this project with the rest of the world!

  5. Beautiful cake! Who would have thought it’s so simple! We’re planning a Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday next year so this would make a cute cake!
