National Clean Out Your Garage Day

Thank you so much to The  The Lehigh Group and Crawford® for providing these products!  Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

Did you know that the Saturday after Labor Day, (September 7th), is “National Clean Out Your Garage Day?” This year will be the 5th annual, and The Lehigh Group safety experts say that cleaning out the clutter doesn’t have to be overwhelming or expensive. To help make garages safer and more functional, they are offering up these organizational tips:

Sort the Mess – Separate your items into categories. Then pitch, donate or sell items you don’t use. After deciding what stays, separate the garage into zones for storing each category of items, and then choose the most appropriate storage method.

Go Vertical – Garages provide ample wall and ceiling space to easily convert for storage through use of hanging shelves, pegboards, storing rails and overhead systems. For example, The Lehigh Group makes a variety of Crawford®-brand flexible mesh storage organizers that hang on the wall and can hold up to 25 lbs. They are particularly suited to accommodate awkward or bulky items, from pet toys to work gloves and camping equipment.

Securely Store Hazardous Items – Place toxic materials such as paint, paint thinner, weed and bug killers, fertilizer and gasoline in high cabinets or lockable tool chests out of children’s reach. Use well-supported shelves to store cleaning solutions and vehicle fluids. Tool hangers, like the Crawford®-brand smart system, work well to store tools and extension cords. The steel rail can be hung on any type of wall. Select models can hold up to 48 tools.

  1. Ha! I did not know that there was a National Clean out Your Garage Day (I need more than one day, though). Good timing! I am currently in the process of making over and overhauling the entire garage; hence my garage makeover series I have been posting.

Hmm…my whole garage needs to be organized. lol But, a way to store all the tools and endless paint supplies would be helpful. Why do I have so many cans of spray paint? 😉

  2. Boy, this would be a great win. My husband needs help in organizing his tools. A lot of them are inherited from his father and grandfather. Thank

  3. My husband’s tools and all the “leftovers” from home improvement projects that are still too useful to get rid of. I have an issue with miscellaneous garden tools too. Organizing that area is on my “to do” list as soon as the cooler weather hits!

  4. I would like to organize my entire garage. We collect so much things in the garage that more organization would help!!

  5. Love following your blog and checking out all your great tips on organization around your home. Our garage always seems to be an insane mess of clutter. From our kids toys, to bikes, to lawn/yard maintenance items, and everything else! We have no good method to organize it right now and would greatly appreciate an opportunity to make it more functional. Thanks and God bless!
