Joyful Homemaking

A Heart For Home

"Monkey Food"

“Dog Food,”  “Monkey Munch” or as my five year old calls it, “Monkey Food” is a rich sweet snack with a few redeeming slightly healthy ingredients.  My kids love making it and eating it!

Here are the ingredients:
8 cups of a corn or rice cereal like Crispix or Chex or any generic brand
1 c of chocolate chips
1/2 c of peanut butter ( I like to throw in an extra spoonful)
1/4 c of butter ( I use a heart healthy kind, but not lowfat)
1 tsp. of vanilla
1 1/2 c powdered sugar

Microwave chocolate, peanut butter and butter till nice and melted and very stir-able (is that a word?).
Measure your cereal into a large bowl.

Then add the vanilla to the chocolate mixture ( I always forget this step).
Pour the chocolate somewhat liquid mixture over the cereal and use a large spoon to gently mix it to coat all the cereal pieces. Then the recipe says to put the powdered sugar into a 2 gallon ziploc bag
(which I never seem to have on hand) so I usually divide the sugar into two gallon size bags, and then divide
the coated cereal mixture between the two bags. Shake to coat with the powdered sugar.

Then store in a  ziploc bag or container. The recipe says to store in the refrigerator although it doesn’t last that long at my house!

Your kids (and you) will love it!

I got this recipe from eHow which has the “original recipe,” but I changed it slightly because I have had trouble in the past getting enough coating for all my cereal.
