My youngest son had his sixth birthday this week, and I had a lot of fun making his cake! I found the idea at the Family Fun website and did my own version. My son’s face just lit up when he saw it!
This was such an easy cake to make, and you get a lot of bang for your buck. The kids couldn’t wait to take the snake and bugs off the cake to play with them.
First, I made 2 chocolate cakes.

The directions said to use a dome bowl for the hill part but I didn’t have one, so I made a bundt cake and improvised, which worked fine.

I cut a couple of sections off of the bundt cake for the hill part, and then covered everything with almost 3 16oz. cans of ready made chocolate frosting.

I used the frosting to shape the little mountain.

For the dirt, I used a 17 oz. package of chocolate creme filled sandwich cookies. I crumbled them with my hands in a ziploc bag, but a blender or food processor would work also. You could also use chocolate animal crackers or chocolate graham crackers.
I poured and used my hands to attach the “dirt” to the frosted cake. Then I just placed the little party favor bugs, lizards, frogs and spiders on the cake.

My little guy’s big excited inhale when he saw the cake was awesome!

If you have a critter lover in your house, this is a fun cake to make!
This is soo adorable. I know he LOVED it!!
