Have you seen these beautiful Christmas flower arrangements with a candy cane vase? I’ve seen several different styles, and have just been itching to make one. So I got busy this week, and raided my craft supplies and Christmas decorations, and the only thing I ended up buying for this project was the candy canes!
Now, if you don’t keep a stash of artificial flowers and ribbons, and other crafting essentials on hand, you’ll have to purchase a few things, if you’d like to make this arrangement. With the average comparable Christmas themed flower arrangements starting at around $40 though, this one would still be a bargain!
Supplies:
4 inch diameter can, washed and dried (I used a pumpkin can)
40 candy canes (this gives you a few extra in case of breakage)
9 artificial red roses
3-4 pine cones
3-4 small metal Christmas decorations
One bunch of long wispy white flowers with greenery
Floral foam
One yard of Christmasy ribbon
Wooden skewers
Optional: fine white sparkly glitter
Tools:
Wire cutters
Glue gun and glue sticks
After warming up your glue gun, start gluing the candy canes to the can. For each candy cane, I put a bead of glue down the can first, and then attached the candy canes standing up, just to make sure they were all flush with the bottom of the can. You may be surprised like I was that they are not all exactly the same size, but that’s ok! Work your way all around the can trying to keep them straight and flush. I though about getting out a small level, but I didn’t go that far!
Excuse the spelling book in the background, I was giving an oral spelling test as I was gluing. 🙂
Now some people take the wrappers off the candy canes, and when they are done, varnish over them, but I wasn’t going to do that, so I left the wrappers on. Since I didn’t like how the wrappers looked though, sticking out from the candy canes, I trimmed the excess wrappers off, put a bead of glue on the tips of the candy canes, and the wrappers shrank up and weren’t as noticeable.
After that, I was ready to put in a chunk of floral foam to make my arrangement.
I’m not a flower arranging expert in the least, so if I can do this, so can you, and probably better! 😛
I started by using the wire cutters and cutting the roses to the length I wanted, and also cutting off the leaves near the bottom of the stems, but saving them in case I needed some fill-in greenery at the end.
Then I arranged them 3 across the diameter of the can in 2 directions, and filled in the spaces from there with the rest of the roses. With the white and green wispy flowers, I just eyeballed where there were gaps in between my roses, and tried to place them symmetrically.
Now if you’re buying your supplies at a craft store, you may be able to find pine-cones and metal colored Christmas balls already on a post, ready to go into your arrangement, but since I was using loose items from my stash, I had an extra step.
I grabbed some wooden skewers from my kitchen, cut them to the length I wanted, and hot glued the pine-cones and metal ornaments onto them.
After it all came together, I thought the pine-cones needed a little sparkle, so I drizzled some fine white glitter onto them. If you choose to do this with your pine-cones, I suggest spraying them with a little adhesive, and putting the glitter on first, before you make your arrangement, as it would be a lot less messy!
If you see any holes or gaps in your arrangement that need something, use your leftover leaves from your roses to fill them in.
I was tickled with the way it turned out, and couldn’t wait to show you. I had a little fun in Picmonkey with the lighting and darkening features, so bear with me on the pictures! 🙂
Just a little note, because I am a responsible firstborn and mother after all, but don’t “recycle” the candy canes and eat them, after you’ve tired of your arrangement. 😛
My beautiful candy cane vase flower arrangement is now gracing my dining table! If you make one, I would LOVE to see a picture of how it turns out!
That’s so cute!

I love this, was actually yesterday thinking of making my own ones. Does the glue last?

In my experience the glue lasts very well. 🙂
