My precious little girl turned 10 this week, and she has an affection for butterflies.
Almost every Spring or Summer we purchase a butterfly kit, and have grown butterflies from larvae.
They first mail you the kit with a coupon to send in for the larvae. The weather has to be good for them to mail them.
It’s been a wonderful addition to our homeschooling curriculum.
Since my daughters always been fascinated with butterflies, I decided to attempt a butterfly cake for her birthday, after seeing this video on Betty Crocker.
It turned out that it wasn’t hard at all!
Here is how I made it: start with an 8 or 9 inch round cake.
Cut in half.
Cut pieces as shown, and then turn them out into a butterfly shape.
To make it easier to frost, Betty Crocker recommended freezing it for a little while first, to prevent so many crumbs.
I used some frosting gel, colored sugar, licorice and jelly beans.
I outlined some designs and filled them in with colored sugar and jelly beans.
There are lots of different and pretty ways you could decorate the wings, but I opted for simple.
My sweet angel loved her cake, and I was thrilled to make it for her!
What an adorable cake for your little girl! I bet she loved it for her birthday! Butterflies are always a lovely choice. 🙂
Blessings,
Leslie
I love this! So cute!!!
I remember my Mom did this one year, and it was the coolest thing ever.
So cute!! Love it!!
The cake looks beautiful. Perfect for the young lady’s b’day.
So pretty! And I think even I could make it! 😉
Super cute and pretty!
I found this through the Teach Me Tuesdays, and I thought it was SO adorable! I love the simplicity of it. My little girl is 3, and I can see her loving this, so I think I’ll stash the idea away for her next birthday 🙂
How sweet and just the right things for a little girl’s 10th Birthday! Heck, I’d take it and I’m nearly old enough to be a G-ma!
Thanks for sharing this project with the rest of the world!

Cute! My sisters and I love baking and we also made a butterfly cake for our younger sister, this post reminded me of that cake. It wasn’t as fancy as yours, and it was our first time making it, but you can see some pictures of it here if you’d like : http://jessicathebaker.wordpress.com/?s=butterfly+cake&submit=Search

Aw, how cute! It makes me wish my girls were girly girls!! (Too much tomboy for a butterfly, but I’m tempted to make that cake for Easter!!)
What a CUTE cake for such a special occasion!! Happy Double Digits Birthday to your daughter! 🙂
This is darling! My daughter is having a “candy- themed” birthday, so this cake would be perfect – thanks for sharing!
Beautiful cake! Who would have thought it’s so simple! We’re planning a Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday next year so this would make a cute cake!
I’d be thrilled if you’d link up at this week’s Off the Hook!
