I’ve been working on the room that my two youngest are going to share for a little while, trying to change it from all “girly” to more neutral colors.
They both love little “creatures” so first I made some inexpensive artwork with green and brown colors…
I also had fun making a colorful balloon wreath to add some additional bright colors to the room.
The lamp shade needed some similar coloring, and so I picked up this fabric to cover it with.
Can I just say, I am NOT qualified to show you how to do it, because it was a nightmare (mostly because of the shape of the shade, and me not making the turned under edge nice and tidy).
I do like the way the finished product looks, however, for an easier DIY project, I would not recommend using the shape of shade that I did. I learned that shades which are closer in diameter from the top to the bottom are much easier to recover (a tube shape). So here are a couple of links to help, in case you try this. (I certainly wish I had looked these up first!):
eHow
mom it forward – trim would have been very helpful to hide imperfections
I also picked up a “laundry hamper” to go with the color theme.
This won’t be for laundry though, I’m thinking of using it in their room to store stuffed animals, or my sons plastic swords (maybe both).
A few more additions, and this room will be “finished.” Some cute but inexpensive sheets, and possibly a rug will be next!
Adorable room decor! Thanks for the heads up on the difficulty factor of that shape shade… I have two lamps I want to redo and I think I’ll look for different shades first!
Visiting from Nap Time Crafters!
If I had to do it again, I would definitely look for a tube shape shade! Even when I searched for tutorials, most of them were for the easier tube shape. The ones I saw for my shape of lampshade, you had to make a pattern and piece it together, which would take too much time for my tastes. 😛
Well, it might have been a nightmare to do, but it looks good in the end. I like the lamp and the hamper…love the color.
Turned out great, crafting nightmares I’m all to familiar with. 🙂 i also love the balloon wreath,
Very cute lampshade! Thanks so much for stopping by Posed Perfection and leaving me a sweet comment about the Chicken Ranch Wrap. I have been stalking your blog for a long time and I am honored you came by for a visit. I hope you’ll pop over again soon. Have a blessed weekend!

Thank you for showing the great projects and the not so great ones. It makes me feel way better when i feel like throwing the craft im working on across the room. 🙂
I saw on another blog that they make self adhesive shades, no mod podge needed! This turned out really cute though!
Love everything you’re doing! Both my son and daughter, ages 3 and 5, are having to share a room for a little while too. I’m having fun with putting the room together, but it has been a challenge to avoid making it too girly. I need to tackle a lampshade too!
That shade looks so cute! I recently re-did some lamps too (still to blog about that yet!) but I tried painting the shade – yeah, you can see all the unevenness when the lamp is on! Ugh! lol
Looks so cute and green is my favorite color! I’m giving it a try because I have a lamp that needs help!
I just covered a shade today, but it was barrel shaped, however, I did cover another one a few weeks ago that had a slight taper to it and this blog helped me get it figured out on how to cut the fabric to fit properly – http://blog.houseoffifty.com/2010/06/how-to-cover-lampshades-with-fabric.html.
I didn’t do mine exactly like she did, but it was a great starting point & I was happy with the results.
I love the lampshade.
