Silverware caddies are a popular gift from me because they can be almost as useful as shoe bags are in the world of organization.
So here is the traditional use for a silverware caddy. I started using one years ago to make it easy for the kids to get their own silverware, and to make it super simple for them to put it away when emptying the dishwasher. It’s also accessible for any guests to find what they need.
However, this divided storage has lots of potential beyond holding silverware.
I snagged this one online to use for our remote controls, because between the two televisions in our living room (one is exclusively for ESPN), the cable boxes and DVD players, we have 5 remote controls, which is just crazy. They end up missing and a frantic search begins, and usually ends, in the couch cushions somewhere, so I thought a designated spot (at least as a goal) might help.
It has worked pretty well with a few additions finding their way in, like my hand lotion and fingernail file.
I saw a great idea at Knot All That I Seam for making a caddy of your own from a basket and coffee mugs, and so I put together one of my own for our home school needs.
I started out with a sturdy basket with a handle,
and added 4 short mason jars.
Then I just filled it with pencils, pens, markers and scissors… The handle makes it extra convenient to move around and use.
I ended up switching the glass jar with the scissors in it for one of these empty frosting containers, to minimize the chance of breaking.
Incidentally, these little containers that store bought frosting come in, are great for storage and organization. My mom won’t throw even one away because she uses them for all kinds of things.
After looking at my blah wooden silverware caddy for this post, I decided to pretty it up a little with some fabric and mod podge.
It’s now a bit more fancy!
So do you have any silverware caddies lying around to repurpose? I’m sure you creative ones could come up with lots more ideas for their use.
Blessings,
Margo,
I have been following your blog for several months now by e-mail….for some reason I no longer am receiving the emails….just wondering what has happened.
Debbie
Hmmm, I don’t know. I did switch to a dotcom address but I would think it would have just transferred. I’ll try to figure it out, but I have noticed a few glitches lately. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
