Have you seen those boxes of prepackaged cereal, nuts, fruit and granola in the little portable snack packs for convenient breakfast or snacking? Well, in the past, I’ve been known to buy those convenient little prepackaged breakfast packs, because they’re delicious, have some nutritious ingredients, and they are such a handy breakfast or snack, with the calories already counted and portioned. BUT, unless I get a really good sale price, the expense can add up, BIG TIME. So I decided to make my own using my choices of cereal, fruit and nuts.
Here are the various goodies I used for my “homemade” breakfast snack packs, and since I was trying to get lots of protein in each serving, I chose more protein rich cereals.
You could use any of your favorite nuts, granola, cereals, raisins etc…
- 1 cup Honey Nut Chex cereal
- 1 cup Cinnamon Almond Cheerios Protein
- 1 cup Kelloggs Cracklin’ Oat Bran
- 1 Cup Nature Valley Peanut Butter Granola Protein
- 1 cup mixed nuts
- 1/4 cup raisins
- 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt covered raisins
Tip: I have made this once with the addition of dried apple slices, and within one day the cereal in the bags were soft. When I made it without the dried apple slices, the cereal stayed nice and crisp. So raisins seem to be the dried fruit that works the best, at least in my experience.
I measured everything out in a large bowl,
and gave it a good stir to mix up everything.
These little snack size zipper bags are the perfect size to hold each portion.
I measured it out in 1/3 cup serving sizes, which is how much is in the store bought ready packs, and since each of the different versions of the store bought ones
have between 180 and 200 calories a serving, I figured mine must be close to that in calorie count.
Using the amounts I did, this made 18 breakfast to go packs.

I think I probably saved at least half off the store bought versions,
by making my “semi-homemade” kind, so you can get so much more “bang for your buck” by making your own!
These are so nice for a portion controlled breakfast or snack, or if you’re running out the door with no time for breakfast at home, or
to keep in your purse for a snack during the day when you’re out!
