Do you ever decide you’re in the mood for something specific for dinner, but when you start making it, you realize you’re missing one important ingredient. For me it’s usually a seasoning, condiment or leavening of some sort that I find out I need, but I’m out of. Taco seasoning would be right up there on that list. We make so many Southwestern dishes in our home, that we go through a lot of taco seasoning. That’s why I’m glad it’s so easy to “DIY” it with ingredients I have on hand in my cupboards. I also like it because I can adjust the heat and the amount of salt in it, depending on what I’m making.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 Tablespoon dried minced onion
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (not salt)
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon oregano
- pinch of pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon paprika
- 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes
This recipe makes 2 Tablespoons of taco seasoning. Most recipes call for one Tablespoon of taco seasoning unless you’re doubling (or more) your recipe. Use 1 Tablespoon of this mixture per 1 one ounce package of seasoning that a recipe calls for.
If you’re making ground turkey or beef for tacos, use 1 Tablespoon of this seasoning per pound of meat. After you brown and drain your meat, add 1/2 cup of water and 1 Tablespoon of the taco seasoning, stir, and cook till the water is gone (maybe 5 minutes).
*If I’m making a soup or something that has other ingredients in it with a fair amount of salt, I like to leave the salt out of this recipe.
Just mix together all the ingredients, and then measure out what you’re going to use. Store the leftover mixture in an airtight container.
