I think I’ve organized every closet in the house except the boys’ closet, although I have organized their room. On top of that I have moved their gaming system from the basement playroom up to their closet, because my six year old won’t go down to the basement by himself, and it also gets a little chilly down there in the winter, so I took pity on them. I’ve had the Wii in our great room before, and would always get frustrated with all the “accessories” that ended up everywhere, so my solution for this season is the boys’ closet which unfortunately needed some de-cluttering of its own.
Here is the cluttered “before” shot. The top of the closet was full of games, blankets, out of season clothes and toys, and the floor was a mess as well, which made the tv look as if it was crammed into a closet (which it was). So I got to work.
This is only about 1/4 of the outgrown clothes I donated to our local thrift store, the other 2 garbage bags got taken out of the house so quickly, that I didn’t get a picture.
Getting rid of so many clothes, left me with a bunch of extra hangers which I also donated. I went through all the blankets and weeded out what we don’t use any more, and relocated the rest.
I picked up another double hanging rod similar to this one that I purchased for my master closet organization.
This gave more hanging space, and allows my six year old to reach his hanging clothes. I also bought a movie poster to liven up the space, and even though I couldn’t find a black frame to fit the poster, I didn’t give up. I found a red one and got out my handy black spray paint, and voila, I had my black frame.
The boys really like how the poster looks, and it gives their closet a more gaming station feel.
To add to the theme, for Christmas, I ordered these inexpensive gaming chairs, and they make all the difference in the “gaming” experience. I feel compelled to tell you all that this tv in their bedroom is NOT hooked up to cable, and is strictly for playing their Wii games, and we do have limits on those.
They still have their blue shelf in the closet to hold their games, I just moved things around to accommodate their extra hanging rod.
They each have a white basket on the top shelf for miscellaneous things and one for baseball caps. Their controllers and other game accessories are in the camo wicker basket under the tv. All in all, it functions and looks much better!
oooh@ looks great!! thanks for the inspiration!!!

Total A-plus Margo! You are my motivator. Thank you!!!
Very good work and timely too–in with the new out with the old for me too. I will be working on closets today at home. Good idea to donate hangers along with the clothes. Our local thrift store really appreciates donations that come with hangers cause they are always running short of them.
Great idea! Divides up the closet and gives them a great gaming area you can close off if you need to.
Thanks for linking to my Organizing & DIY link party.
Awesome inspiration. This time of the year just screams for reorganization. Thanks for sharing at DIYbyDesign.
It looks great! I need to get some of those double hanging rods for my girls’ room.
The closet looks great! I need to re-organize our gaming area in the basement. My ds15 is frustrated by the younger kids playing with his games and breaking them. It’s one of my projects for the new year.
I need you to come to my house! The closet looks great.
Great idea!!
