Do you like pizza? Who doesn’t, right!? Growing up, every Friday night was pizza night. I didn’t realize the specialness of traditions as a child, but now as an adult and mom of three, I have fond memories of having a regular pizza night.
My kids have inherited my love for pizza, but sometimes we run out of time to let the dough rise for our favorite pizza dough recipe. So our delicious quick alternative is oven baked pizza grilled cheese.
They are absolutely scrumptious AND so easy to make 6 at a time on my large baking sheet, AND no one has to wait while I’m cooking in batches over a frying pan!
INGREDIENTS:
- Sliced bread of your choice (we like Italian)
- Pepperoni slices (we like turkey pepperoni)
- Provolone or Mozzarella cheese slices
- Butter
- Italian Seasoning
- Garlic Salt
- Your favorite Pasta Sauce
Now pretty much everything in this recipe is according to your taste. If you like lots of butter, use lots of butter, or if you only like a little pepperoni, then only use a few slices…
Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
Depending on how many sandwiches you’re making, you need 2 slices of bread for each, about a Tablespoon of butter for each sandwich, and of course at least one cheese slice for each. Now I like to melt my butter a bit and brush it on the outside of each slice, but it’s probably not necessary if you prefer instead to use a knife and spread un-melted butter on your bread.
After buttering, one side of each slice of bread (the side exposed to the pan), sprinkle each slice with a bit of garlic salt and Italian seasoning. Don’t get heavy handed with the garlic salt or your sandwich will be too salty. Then lay half of your buttered slices face down on your baking sheet, top each with a slice of cheese, and a layer of pepperoni, and another slice of buttered bread. When you’ve made how many you want, they are ready to go in the oven.
In a preheated 425 degree oven, bake on one side for around 6 minutes, checking though to get it to your preferred degree of “toastiness.” Then carefully flip over and bake for another 3 minutes or so, again watching for the perfect “brown-ness” for your taste.
The cheese gets hot and bubbly throughout, and the bread becomes slightly chewy and a bit crunchy.
Who knew that making grilled cheese in the oven would be not only more efficient but also much tastier!
Now some people like to include pasta sauce in their sandwiches, but for me, they get too soggy and messy. We like to have our pasta sauce on the side and “dip” our sandwiches!
These are ooey gooey scrumptious, and my youngest likes me to make an extra to take in his lunch the next day. He says all the other kids eye his sandwich longingly…
